Through calligraphy and painting, this project documents the cultural character, spiritual journeys, and life stories of contemporary Chinese Buddhist monastics—preserving an authentic record of the present and a meaningful cultural legacy for the future.
Preserving an Authentic Cultural Record of Our Time
Calligraphy and painting are more than forms of art. They are also cultural imprints left by an era. Within an individual’s brushwork are often found their character, learning, life experience, and understanding of both life and spiritual practice.
The International Hua Yan Buddhist Federation initiated Chinese Buddhist Monastic Art Worldwide to collect original works of calligraphy and painting by 108 Chinese Buddhist monastics in China and around the world, together with the spiritual journeys and personal stories behind their art.
Today, these works record the present. With the passage of time, they will become valuable materials through which future generations may come to understand the Chinese Buddhist monastic community of our era.
Through One Work of Art, We Encounter One Monastic—and an Entire Era
Chinese Buddhist monastics live and practice in many different countries and regions. Each has a distinctive life experience and spiritual journey. Through their own paths, they study and practice the Dharma, serve their communities, and express their understanding of Buddhism, life, and the world through calligraphy and painting.
When these works remain only in private hands, many of the stories behind them may gradually disappear over time. By bringing the artwork, the individual, and the story together, we can create an authentic and meaningful cultural record.
Many years from now, people will still be able to encounter, through these works of brush and ink, the cultural character, spiritual qualities, and lived experiences of contemporary Chinese Buddhist monastics.

From Individual Works to a Living Cultural Archive
01 | Collecting the Art
We invite Chinese Buddhist monastics in China and around the world to contribute one original work of calligraphy or painting, preserving an authentic expression from this period of their lives.
02 | Recording the Stories
Each work will be accompanied by an explanation of its meaning, together with the monastic’s personal background, spiritual journey, and experiences in sharing and serving through the Dharma.
03 | Publishing the Collection
The artwork, photographs, and personal accounts will be edited and published as a book, bringing together cultural materials that are currently dispersed across different regions of the world.
04 | Exhibiting and Sharing
Selected works will be presented through exhibitions and cultural exchange programs, allowing people from different backgrounds to encounter Chinese Buddhist culture through calligraphy and painting.
Brushwork and Life Stories
As each participating monastic’s materials are received, we will gradually introduce the individual, the artwork, its meaning, and the personal story behind it through our website.
Through one work of art, readers may come to know one monastic. Through one monastic’s life journey, they may gain a deeper understanding of how Chinese Buddhism is practiced and carried forward in different countries and regions.
Bringing Dispersed Memories Together in One Publication
The project plans to feature original works of calligraphy and painting by 108 Chinese Buddhist monastics. Each work will be presented together with an explanation, a photograph of the monastic, and a personal account.
Every work is an authentic expression of an individual. Together, the works of 108 monastics will gradually reveal the cultural character, spiritual qualities, and lived experiences of the contemporary Chinese Buddhist monastic community.
The completed publication will serve as a cultural archive that can be read, studied, and preserved, allowing the record we create today to remain visible for generations to come.
